Dogs trapped as Carmarthenshire rescue centre flooded by heavy rain

As torrential rains caused widespread flooding in various parts of Wales, all 37 dogs residing in the loft of Glanrhyd Dog Sanctuary in Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire found themselves stranded. River banks burst on Tuesday, leading to a rescue operation where emergency services managed to save nine dogs, but the remaining, described as “more reactive,” were left behind. Proprietor Alison Clark described the chaotic scene, emphasizing the challenges faced in bringing the dogs to safety as floodwaters rapidly rose.

The flooding didn’t spare other areas in Wales, with Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Swansea grappling with significant disruption and warnings. Glanrhyd Dog Sanctuary was entirely cut off, with the road submerged for the 12th time since July. Despite the dire circumstances, Clark ensured the dogs’ safety, noting that she managed to keep them alive amidst the devastation. However, the floodwaters damaged the property extensively, leaving only the loft as a temporary haven for the trapped dogs.

In addition to the challenges faced at the sanctuary, widespread flooding across Wales was evident, prompting Natural Resources Wales to issue numerous flood warnings and alerts. Schools in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire shut down as a safety precaution, while the Joint Fire Control Centre handled a deluge of calls related to flooding incidents. The flooding was exacerbated by very high spring tides attributed to a “supermoon,” adding further complexity to an already dire situation.

The impact of the flooding extended beyond dog sanctuaries, affecting businesses like The Gatehouse pub in Swansea and The Cresselly Arms in Pontargothi, Carmarthen. Locals faced evacuations and significant damage to property as floodwaters surged, inundating the surroundings. The devastating series of floods highlighted the vulnerability of various areas to extreme weather conditions, necessitating immediate action to mitigate the repercussions of the natural disaster
