Vapers overtake smokers for first time in Great Britain

In a new report by the Office for National Statistics, it has been revealed that for the first time in Great Britain, more individuals over the age of 16 are using vapes or e-cigarettes compared to those smoking traditional cigarettes. The survey conducted in 2024 found that approximately 5.4 million adults use vapes daily or occasionally, surpassing the 4.9 million who still smoke cigarettes.

Interestingly, daily use of vapes is most prevalent among individuals aged 25-49, with a noticeable increase in use among women. This shift in behavior can be attributed to the steady decline in cigarette smoking over the past decade, as more individuals are becoming aware of the harmful effects of tobacco. Vaping, being perceived as a less risky alternative, has gained popularity, particularly among younger age groups.

While the NHS acknowledges that vaping poses a significantly lower risk compared to smoking, as cigarettes release numerous harmful chemicals when burned, the long-term effects of vaping remain unknown. Health experts caution that vaping is not entirely harmless, and therefore advise against its use by children and non-smokers. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) views the decline in smoking rates as a positive development for public health, but emphasizes the importance of supporting those still struggling with nicotine addiction.

The ONS statistics indicate that 10% of adults aged 16 and older in Great Britain use an e-cigarette daily or occasionally, slightly exceeding the 9.1% who currently smoke. The number of individuals who have successfully quit smoking has risen to 74.2% in 2024, up from 70.3% in the previous year. Over the years, significant measures have been implemented to curb smoking, such as bans on smoking in public places, in cars with children, and the introduction of plain cigarette packaging. Legislation like the upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to further restrict access to tobacco products and regulate the sale of vapes to protect young individuals from potential harm
