Boy killed on rail crossing was watching phone video, report says

A tragic incident took place at a level crossing in Kenley, south London, where 11-year-old Jaiden Shehata lost his life after being hit by a train. Reports from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) suggest that Jaiden was distracted by a video on his mobile phone while crossing the rail line on his way to school.

The Bourneview footpath crossing, where the accident occurred, lacked warning lights or barriers, relying on users to exercise caution by stopping, looking, listening, and deciding when to cross. Unfortunately, the absence of safety features at the site contributed to the fatal outcome for Jaiden.

CCTV footage analyzed by investigators indicated that Jaiden was engrossed in a video on his phone as he walked towards the crossing. Despite the train driver’s attempts to alert him by sounding the horn and applying emergency brakes, Jaiden was unable to react in time due to his distraction by the phone.

Network Rail, in response to the tragedy, has committed to implementing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. They plan to install safety features such as miniature stop lights to provide clearer signals and warnings to pedestrians using the level crossing. Additionally, the RAIB’s recommendations for targeted safety lessons and enhanced risk mitigation at level crossings will be crucial in ensuring the safety of all users
