A tomato-laden van weighing 6,080kg (13,404lbs) was confiscated by police for being nearly double the legal weight limit. Cambridgeshire Police conducted a crackdown on the A16 stretch between Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire as part of Operation Chambers, focusing on combating rural crime. The driver of the overloaded van was found to be unlicensed and uninsured, resulting in a £200 fixed penalty notice.
Sgt Tom Nuttall acknowledged the frustration faced by victims of rural crimes, such as agricultural theft, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing such issues. Lincolnshire Police’s rural crime action team, the Environment Agency, and Peterborough City Council coordinated with Cambridgeshire Police during the operation. Vehicles were redirected to Thorney Road South in Crowland, Lincolnshire, for thorough inspections and checks.
In total, 25 vehicles were stopped during the six-hour operation, leading to the identification of 91 untaxed vehicles by the DVLA and uncovering various other motoring violations. Additionally, a 35-year-old man was apprehended for immigration-related offenses.
