Hackney bus driver suspended after Jewish man 'shut inside bus'

In an alarming incident, a 52-year-old Orthodox Jewish man faced antisemitic abuse from a London bus driver who refused to return his bank card and trapped him inside the vehicle for nearly an hour. David Abraham boarded the 149 bus on Stoke Newington Road in Hackney, only to drop his bank card inside the driver’s cab at 13:35 GMT on Monday. The situation escalated when the driver accused him of resembling a Mossad agent and then proceeded to call the Metropolitan Police.

Transport for London (TfL) condemned the driver’s behavior as “unacceptable” and has suspended him pending an investigation into the matter. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the incident, which has been classified as a hate crime, was reported by the victim the following day. Mr. Abraham expressed his fear and shock over the situation, recounting how the driver made derogatory remarks about his Jewish identity and initially refused to give back his card even when the police intervened.

Following the incident, TfL reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards abuse and emphasized their collaboration with law enforcement to address such misconduct. Arriva London Bus, the bus operator, assured a thorough investigation and emphasized their commitment to handling the issue seriously. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that they are actively investigating the verbal dispute that took place on the bus in Stamford Hill, Hackney, on October 27, without making any arrests yet. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the authorities and provide details referencing CAD 3847/27OCT25
