New Firework Control Zones Enforced in Glasgow and Edinburgh
For the first time, restrictions banning fireworks in certain areas of Glasgow have finally come into effect. This decision was initially delayed last year due to missed deadlines by the Glasgow City Council. The Firework Control Zone (FCZ) was supposed to be implemented in Pollokshields last November, but it had to be postponed as the legal notice required for its establishment was not issued in time.
This year, FCZs have been established in three areas of the city – Pollokshields, Govanhill, and Broomhouse. The main aim behind these zones is to minimize disorder during the Bonfire Night period. It is now a criminal offense for any member of the public to ignite a firework within these zones from November 1 to November 10.
The restrictions cover both private spaces such as back gardens and public areas, with the exception of sparklers. The hope is that this measure will enhance safety, reduce disruptions, and safeguard vulnerable residents and animals from the loud noises associated with fireworks, following extensive debates on their negative impact.
Edinburgh also saw the introduction of FCZs in nine areas last Friday, enforced by Police Scotland until November 9. Breaching these restrictions could lead to imprisonment for up to six months and a fine of up to £5,000. Residents of Pollokshields have witnessed disorder during Bonfire Night in recent years, as hooded individuals have been firing large fireworks at buildings, cars, and people.
