Zarah Sultana, in collaboration with Jeremy Corbyn, has unveiled a new progressive political party with ambitions of governing, despite facing internal disagreements and challenges. The Coventry South MP parted ways with the Labour Party in July to establish the nascent group, known temporarily as Your Party, emphasizing that it is a long-term endeavor rather than a fleeting protest. An ongoing controversy surrounding leadership, finances, and even the party’s name has overshadowed its initial stages.
In a candid conversation with BBC’s Political Thinking hosted by Nick Robinson, Sultana outlined the party’s vision as being “socialist, democratic, and member-led.” If elected, the focus would be on initiatives like nationalization, constructing council housing, and creating secure employment opportunities. She emphasized the necessity of seizing state power to effect tangible improvements in people’s lives, reiterating the party’s commitment to achieving justice.
Since its inception four months ago, the fledgling party has been marred by internal disputes and legal threats among its founding members. Recent resignations from the board of MoU Operations Ltd, responsible for managing the party’s finances and membership, have exacerbated tensions within the organization. Allegations of mishandled donations and data retention issues have plagued Your Party, with significant reconciliation efforts necessary to stabilize the situation.
Sultana’s push to name the party The Left Party has met with resistance from Corbyn, who favors retaining the name Your Party. A decisive vote on the party’s official name is slated to occur at a founding conference in Liverpool next month. Despite Sultana’s aspiration to co-lead the party with Corbyn, the final decision on leadership structure will be determined by members at the forthcoming conference.
