Conservationists in France were astonished to spot a rare butterfly, one that had not been seen in the country for 53 years.
Known as the white-mantled wainscot, the butterfly was last seen in 1972 in France. But this September, Pierre Oger encountered the species on the island of Ré, off the western coast.
“I was so surprised that I was shaking,” said Oger, a tour guide who specializes in natural history, “Because I knew immediately that it was a species that shouldn’t be there.”
The butterfly’s return to Ré came after the area was targeted for conservation by France’s wildlife agency, the National Conservatory of Botanical Conservatories.
