In a statement released in September 2022, Lloyd said: “Although I respect the court’s decision, I have consistently maintained that it is not my fault that five people died on the River Cleddau… My innocent participation in the events of that tragic day has led to my life being destroyed.”

A report by senior District Judge Justin Walters found inadequate supervision, poor instruction and a failure to appreciate the dangers posed by the weir contributed to the deaths.

It concluded: “I find that the failures of Lloyd were a significant cause of death.”

Following the inquest conclusions, Teresa said: “She’s ruined mine and Darren’s life, took it from us, and those precious memories, she took them all away with what she did.

“She’d lost everyone due to her decisions but she had to put her side across… We’ve not had an apology from her, we’ve never heard from her, nothing at all.”

Prosecutors in the case said lloyd failed to provide adequate risk assessments and had breached the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 by failing to ensure the welfare and safety of the customers.

Lloyd was sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service and a 16-month suspended jail sentence. She was also ordered to pay £15,000 in legal costs.

Prosecutors in the case said Lloyd “knowingly exposed her customers to risk of harm.”

For the bereaved families, the punishments do not feel like justice.

Darren said: “She’s still walking about free, spending time with her family. We still can’t see our mam, Nicola can’t see us… I just think it’s absolutely ridiculous. She was the person responsible for what happened… she gets to walk away from court.”
