Dog owners reminded to be vigilant when leaving pups in someone else’s care

Liverpool City Council is issuing a warning to dog owners to verify the licensing status of their pet boarders, following the sentencing of a local woman who was operating an illegal dog boarding business. Ms Emma Guy was discovered earlier this year to be providing home boarding services under the business name Perfect Pets Home From Home, without the necessary license, and promoting her services on various websites.

Despite being informed of the legal requirements for home boarding by the Council, Ms Guy chose not to respond and continued advertising online. Concerns were raised during an inspection of her advertisements, including images showing dogs being fed potentially harmful human food and being kept near young infants. With no further communication from Ms Guy, the Council took the matter to court, which resulted in her being found guilty in her absence on October 23rd and ordered to pay a fine of £1,444 within 28 days.

According to the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, individuals offering home boarding for dogs as a business are required to hold a valid license. These regulations are in place to ensure the well-being of animals and to guarantee that all pet care businesses are operating responsibly. Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, emphasized the importance of licensing in maintaining safe, clean, and properly supervised environments for animals, reinforcing the idea that pets are part of the family and deserve protection even while away from home.

In light of this incident, the Council is urging residents to always confirm the licensing status of a pet boarder before making any bookings. Any suspicions of illegal activities can be reported to the Council online. This case serves as a reminder of the risks that unlicensed operators pose to pets and the negative impact they have on responsible businesses
