A massive 100ft (30m) union jack flag has been hoisted up on the side of a former council building in Derbyshire, replacing a smaller one that violated planning regulations. Property developer James Holmes had previously erected a 36ft (11m) flag on the old North East Derbyshire District Council building in Saltergate, Chesterfield, during September. However, the Chesterfield Borough Council deemed it an “unauthorised advertisement” because it promoted Mr. Holmes’s commercial website for the Fly the Flag campaign. Now, Mr. Holmes has escalated by having an even larger flag printed and installed for £3,000, with the council declaring that it will not be taken down.
Mr. Holmes acknowledged his error in judgment regarding the flag size, confessing, “This flag was a mistake – I should have made it bigger.” He mentioned that he could have gone two meters larger and it would still have fit that area of the building. As for the new flag flying high, Mr. Holmes expressed that it lights up the street due to the constant sunlight on that side, creating a visually striking display. He emphasized that the intention was never to stir controversy, yet currently, aside from the crooked spire, Chesterfield appears to be more renowned for this flag.
The borough council has verified that Mr. Holmes’s latest flag adheres to all planning guidelines and will not be subject to removal. A council spokesperson commended Mr. Holmes’s recognition of the national Remembrance period, which aligns with their own values. Addressing the issue of the previous union flags that promoted a commercial website, the council warned of enforcement action if the remaining unauthorised advertisement is not taken down. Mr. Holmes took ownership of the former North East Derbyshire District Council building in the year 2021, with ongoing discussions underway regarding his development plans with the council
