Evie Lake from North East and Cumbria has highlighted the efforts of conservationists to raise £30m to purchase the Rothbury Estate, a vast upland estate consisting of former grouse moor, woodland, and farmland. The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust are leading the charge to secure the estate and support wildlife, restore bogs, and promote nature-friendly farming. With a deadline looming to raise the required funds, Sir David Attenborough has called on the public to support the bid.
The Rothbury Estate, spanning 15 sq miles (38.8 sq km), is facing the possibility of being broken up and sold off if the funds are not raised. Sir David emphasized the urgency to save the estate in a video message, stressing the importance of preserving the natural beauty and habitats of the area. The estate is situated in a crucial location, forming part of a potential “wild” corridor that stretches across 40 miles (64km) from the coast to Kielder and the Scottish border, encompassing the Simonside Hills.
Previously owned by the Duke of Northumberland’s youngest son, Lord Max Percy, Rothbury Estate has been within the family for approximately 700 years. Now, the partnership between Northumberland Wildlife Trust and the Wildlife Trusts aims to secure the funds by October 2024 to complete the purchase. Sir David expressed the need for local farmers and communities to work together with the trusts to preserve the area’s habitats and create a thriving environment for both people and nature.
The fundraising efforts have already gathered £8m in donations, ranging from small to substantial contributions. However, there is still a substantial amount to be raised to secure the remaining portion of the required funds. Plans for the estate include introducing large herbivores, such as ponies, cattle, and potentially bison, to graze the land naturally. With the hope of attracting more diverse wildlife, including pine martens, beavers, and golden eagles, the conservationists aim to enhance the biodiversity of the area and provide a haven for endangered species
