A British man has been arrested by Ukrainian authorities on allegations of espionage in favor of Russia. The individual, who remains unnamed, is accused of passing sensitive information to Russian intelligence while working as a military instructor in Ukraine. Authorities in Kyiv revealed that the Briton arrived in the country in January 2024 and conducted training sessions for military personnel in Mykolaiv, a city located near the front line in the southern region.
Following his assignment in Mykolaiv, the man reportedly joined Ukrainian border units. The suspect is currently in custody without bail as a pre-trial investigation takes place. The Ukrainian security services have indicated that he could potentially face up to 12 years in prison for his alleged actions. The BBC has reached out to the Foreign Office for a response in relation to the incident.
According to statements from the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office, the British man ceased his role as an instructor in September 2024 before relocating to Odesa. It was in Odesa where he allegedly made contact with a Russian intelligence agent, agreeing to exchange military information for financial compensation. The prosecution claims to have evidence indicating the suspect transmitting details on Ukrainian units, training sites, and personnel details that could jeopardize their safety.
The accused is also charged with collecting data on Odesa’s infrastructure, attempting to infiltrate military units, and engaging in discussions about the potential use of explosives. The prosecutors highlighted that the suspect received $6,000 (£5,148) in exchange for one of the tasks assigned to him. In parallel statements, Ukraine’s security service, the SBU, disclosed that the man was allegedly plotting terrorist activities.
