Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, an asylum seeker, has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing Gurvinder Johal, 37, in a Lloyds Bank branch in Derby. The incident, which was captured on CCTV, took place on May 6, just after 14:30 BST. Mr. Johal’s family condemned Nur as a “coward and demon” who robbed his children of their innocence. Nur has been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years behind bars. The court heard that he arrived in the UK in October 2024 after spending time in several European countries.
Judge Shaun Smith, during the sentencing, described the murder as a brutal and callous act, stating that Nur selected Mr. Johal randomly and stabbed him in the chest without any provocation.
