The smartphone for children that blocks porn

A ground-breaking smartphone has emerged, claiming to automatically block nude content in efforts to create a safer online environment for children. Human Mobile Devices (HMD) from Finland has introduced the Fuse handset, equipped with parental controls such as location tracking, screen time limits, app blocking, and trusted contact whitelisting. Initially starting as a “brick” with no access to social media or app stores, parents have the authority to grant access to apps when they deem appropriate and monitor usage through an accompanying app on their own device.

What sets the Fuse handset apart is the incorporation of HarmBlock AI into the phone’s operating system, making it the first defense mechanism that children cannot circumvent. Developed by UK firm SafeToNet, this technology scans content in real time, instantly barring pornography, deleting files containing nudity, and preventing the camera from capturing nude images. According to HMD’s vice president, James Robinson, this innovation signifies a significant advancement towards a safer phone and establishes a new category prioritizing children’s safety from the get-go.

The HarmBlock AI is touted to function seamlessly offline and across any app, camera, website, or message without gathering user data, including photos, videos, or browsing history. Founder of SafeToNet, Richard Pursey, emphasizes the significance of addressing peer-to-peer online abuse and child exploitation, marking the Fuse handset as “pornography incompatible.” This launch coincides with a global movement, spearheaded by the Netherlands, advocating for smartphone bans in schools to enhance focus and academic performance, while promoting play. Despite this, many parents still value the ability for their children to have phones for emergency communication, underscoring the importance of integrating safety measures into technological advancements
