Alleged stalker tells of tears outside McCann family home

Julia Wandelt has testified that there were emotional moments between her and Kate McCann during a face-to-face encounter near the McCann family home. Wandelt, along with co-defendant Karen Spragg, is accused of stalking the McCanns. The 24-year-old claimed she is Madeleine McCann and tried to present a DNA report to Mrs. McCann on December 7, 2024.

According to Wandelt, Mrs. McCann started crying immediately upon their interaction, which caused her to become upset as well. Mr. McCann arrived at the scene and suggested Wandelt seek help. The Leicester Crown Court heard that a DNA test conducted on Wandelt proved she is not the missing child Madeleine McCann.

Madeleine’s disappearance in Portugal in 2007 remains unsolved and is a widely reported case of a missing child. Wandelt stated that she did not touch Mrs. McCann and expressed that she never intended to harm her. She mentioned her struggles with finances and the assistance she received from DNA expert Dr. Monte Miller to compile a report about her potential identity as Madeleine.

The court also reviewed messages and voicemails left by Wandelt for Mrs. McCann, emphasizing her belief that she could be Madeleine. Wandelt shared memories and thoughts related to Madeleine’s abduction but insisted she did not aim to cause distress to the McCann family. The trial featured testimonies from individuals who interacted with Wandelt regarding her claims of being Madeleine, including a trip to the US organized by an American woman named Fia Johansson.

Miss Wandelt’s trial continues as she faces charges of stalking the McCanns and asserting her identity as Madeleine McCann. The emotional encounters and efforts to prove her identity have sparked interest and scrutiny in the case as the legal proceedings progress
