Health officials in the UK are urging gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men to ensure they are vaccinated against mpox, as a strain known as ‘clade Ib’ is showing signs of local spread in various European countries. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported small numbers of cases of this strain in Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the US.
Although mpox is typically a mild infection, it can occasionally be severe. Therefore, getting vaccinated is crucial for protection against this virus. Charities are also emphasizing the importance of vaccination, especially for those planning to attend Winter Pride events in Europe later in the year.
Dr. Katy Sinka, head of sexually transmitted infections at UKHSA, highlighted the need for eligible individuals to come forward for the vaccine as global spread of mpox continues. The latest UKHSA report raises concerns about the high risk of clade Ib being imported into the UK through travel, but reassures that the existing vaccination program for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men is likely to help control the spread to some extent.
People at higher risk of contracting mpox, such as those who have multiple sexual partners, engage in group sex, or visit sex-on-premises venues, are strongly recommended to get vaccinated. The vaccine is also advised for individuals working at such venues, as well as anyone who has had close contact with an infected person. While the vaccine’s effectiveness against clade Ib mpox hasn’t been specifically tested, it is known to provide protection against another strain called clade II.
