Liverpool City Council is set to host its annual Remembrance Service on Sunday, November 9th at the plateau of St George’s Hall. This year holds special significance as it marks the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, signifying the end of World War II in Europe and the Far East. The event aims to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by those who served, those currently serving, and those who lost their lives in conflict.
The service will feature musical performances by The Band of The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, The Pipes and Drums of The Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association, the Liverpool Gospel Choir, PopVox Choir, St Edward’s College Senior Choir, and Liverpool Mezzo Soprano Danielle Louise Thomas. Notable participants include John Dennett, a 101-year-old Royal Navy veteran who played a significant role in the D-Day landings, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine will also be acknowledged for its historical work with Far East POWs.
The service is open to all, with attendees encouraged to arrive early due to road closures in the surrounding area from 7:00am to 1:00pm on the day of the event. The highlight of the service will be the firing of a field gun at 11:00am by 208 Battery, 103 Regiment Royal Artillery to signify the commencement of a two-minute silence. Following the silence, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony and a parade from St George’s Plateau to the Cenotaph.
In addition to these activities, a new artwork by Lego architect Neil Walker, designed in the form of a Victory in Japan commemoration Lego Poppy, will be on display at St George’s Hall. The Town Hall, St George’s Hall, and Cunard building will be illuminated in red from November 7th to November 9th, and large poppies will adorn the Town hall balcony and the Bombed-Out Church. These commemorations serve as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served in World War II and highlight the unity and respect within the community
