Kathleen is now 65 and hopes her book will encourage other survivors to speak out
Fred and Rosemary West were investigated and arrested in 1994 which is when Kathleen’s memories of her time at their home began to resurface.
She says she needed to share her story as a form of catharsis and to do her bit to support other survivors of abuse by raising awareness of the reality of such experiences.
However, the process of writing, revisiting memories and sorting out “what the reality is and what was in my imagination” has been incredibly challenging.
“It has been a prison sentence for me actually and I don’t believe in ‘triggers’ but this has been ongoing for two years and I’ve had many tears and sleepless nights,” says Kathleen.
The memories of what happened at 25 Cromwell Street have had a lasting impact on her life.
You can read more about Kathleen’s story and experiences in her book, Under Their Roof, which is available now.
