Man rescued from quicksand in Morecambe Bay

A harrowing incident unfolded in Morecambe Bay as emergency teams raced against time to rescue a man trapped in quicksand. The tide was rapidly encroaching, making it a close call as the man struggled to stay afloat. The Bay Search and Rescue team sprang into action when they received the distress call, finding the man barely visible above the sand in Silverdale, Lancashire.

The man was found lying on his back, with only his chest, head, one arm, and part of a leg protruding from the sand as the tide rapidly approached. By the time the rescue team reached him at 11:30 BST on Saturday, he was exhausted and suffering from hypothermia. A spokesperson for the rescue team described the situation as surreal, with the tide beginning to fill the gulley as they left the scene, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Fortunately, the man had not sunk too deeply into the quicksand, thanks to how he had positioned himself. Despite his fatigue and hypothermia, the rescue team quickly devised a plan to extract him safely. Using two rescue air pathways, the team managed to reach the man and hoist him to dry land within a matter of minutes. Once on solid ground, he was promptly assessed by a medic and wrapped in foil blankets to combat the chilling effects of hypothermia.

Following his rescue, the man was transported to an all-terrain vehicle by the rescue team for further evaluation and treatment. North West Ambulance Service staff at a cafe in Arnside, Carnforth, attended to him, ensuring he received the care he needed. The rescue team expressed their gratitude to the various emergency services that aided in the operation, including Arnside and South Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, for their invaluable support
