A potentially dangerous device was discovered at a residential property in Londonderry, leading to a serious threat to the local community, according to police officials. Following the report of the device at around 17:35 BST on Saturday, cordons were established around Campion Court in the Waterside area.
Residents were given the choice to evacuate, and a rest center was set up at the Hillcrest Community Centre to accommodate those in need. Fortunately, the situation has been resolved, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes after the device was inspected by Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) and deemed viable.
Detective Inspector Hanbidge of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) expressed gratitude that the device was discovered before any potential detonation. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or items to the authorities promptly. Police presence in the area will continue as further investigations are carried out, ensuring the safety of the community.
Waterside councillor Martin Reilly of the SDLP condemned the incident, labeling it as an unnecessary disturbance for residents and a strain on PSNI resources. He commended those at Hillcrest for offering assistance to those affected, but called on those responsible for causing the alert to cease their actions, emphasizing the disruption and anxiety they have caused to the community.
