TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari has double crash murder sentence reduced

The Court of Appeal has recently reduced the sentence of TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari, who was convicted of murdering her mother’s lover and his friend in a high-speed car chase. Initially sentenced to a minimum of 31 years and eight months, her term has now been shortened to 26 years and 285 days. This decision came after appeal judges recognized that her original sentence did not adequately consider her young age at the time of the crime.

The murder trial revealed that Mahek’s mother, Ansreen Bukhari, had tried to end her affair with the victim, Saqib Hussain, who threatened to release explicit material if she did not pay him £3,000. Prosecutors argued that both victims were lured into a meeting under false pretenses, where they were ambushed by the Bukharis and others in a violent confrontation. The outcome was a fatal car chase that resulted in the deaths of both young men.

During the Court of Appeal hearing, Mahek’s barrister emphasized her age and lack of maturity as factors that should have led to a lighter sentence. However, the judges acknowledged the disproportionality of her response to the situation. Despite this, they agreed that her youth and immaturity were not given enough weight in determining her minimum term. Additional individuals involved in the crime also had their sentences reduced.

The manslaughter sentences given to Natasha Akhtar, Rekan Karwan, Raees Jamal, Ameer Jamal, and Sanaf Gulamustafa were deemed excessive by the Court of Appeal. Consequently, each individual’s term was reduced by two years, with the judges noting that the overall balance of aggravation and mitigation in their cases had been misjudged. The court concluded that the sentences for all those involved were overly harsh and should have been significantly lower
