Discussing potential strategies to support Ukraine in its conflict against Russia, Sir Keir Starmer will be leading efforts to secure more long-range missiles for Ukraine to target Russian positions. A meeting is set to take place in London on Friday, where the British Prime Minister will convene with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a coalition of over 20 allied nations committed to providing security guarantees to Ukraine post-ceasefire.
President Zelensky has been appealing for additional long-range weaponry from Western allies, despite warnings from Russia that such actions would only escalate the ongoing conflict. Recently, Zelensky visited Brussels to engage with EU leaders in a bid to secure financial assistance for Ukraine’s war-torn economy.
Notably, Zelensky has seen diplomatic victories this week with former US President Donald Trump announcing increased sanctions on Russia, and the European Union agreeing to fill a shortfall in the Ukrainian budget. To maintain this momentum, Sir Keir aims to heighten pressure on Moscow to engage in meaningful negotiations to end the hostilities.
The summit on Friday will see the likes of Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Netherlands’ Dick Schoof in attendance, with French President Emmanuel Macron joining virtually. Sir Keir plans to advocate for expanded provision of long-range weapons following a successful attack utilizing British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles on a chemical plant in Bryansk, Russia.
In response to recent tragic events, including the loss of innocent lives in Russian strikes, Sir Keir emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine. Additionally, plans to expedite the delivery of 100 air defense missiles to Ukraine, part of a previously agreed £1.6bn deal with the UK, will be announced by Sir Keir during the meeting. The ultimate goal remains to push for peace while bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the face of continued aggression
