Sheffield Wednesday: Championship club enters administration

Sheffield Wednesday, currently sitting at the bottom of the Championship, has been placed into administration by the EFL, resulting in an automatic 12-point deduction for the club. The decision comes after Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor were appointed as joint-administrators due to the looming threat of His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs issuing a winding-up petition against the Owls.

Despite the immediate deduction, the EFL stated that administration provides an opportunity for the club to move towards a successful sale and secure its future under new ownership. This move effectively brings an end to Dejphon Chansiri’s decade-long ownership of the club, with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust ending their boycott of matches in response.

Interested buyers have already emerged, with administrators actively engaging in discussions and inviting offers from potential investors. Sheffield Wednesday emphasized the need for fan support, as revenue from ticket sales, merchandise, and concessions will play a crucial role in stabilizing the club during this transitional period.

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust has lifted their boycott, urging fans to attend the upcoming fixture against Oxford United. The government has also responded to the club’s situation, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighting the importance of introducing an independent football regulator to prevent such financial instability and protect the interests of clubs, fans, and communities
