Following his return to the UK on a small boat after being deported to France under the “one in one out” policy, a migrant is set to be expedited in his removal process, as confirmed by the prime minister. Reports from the Guardian indicate that the man disclosed being a victim of modern slavery at the hands of smuggling gangs in France.
Sir Keir Starmer expressed his thoughts to the BBC, highlighting the futility of the man’s attempts to return to the UK, given his circumstances as an Iranian national. The Labour leader emphasized that the individual is already within the system and identified, ensuring a swift process for his deportation out of the country.
The detainment and subsequent removal of the migrant on 19 September, followed by his re-entry into the UK a month later on 18 October, mark a significant development under the scheme. Over 40 individuals arriving in the UK unlawfully have been subjected to removal procedures since the initiative’s inception in September.
Under the terms of the agreement, France agreed to repatriate migrants who had journeyed to the UK via small boats and had their asylum application invalidated. In return, the UK committed to accepting a refugee eligible for protection for every individual returned to France, provided they had not attempted a Channel crossing.
