Afua Kyei, who serves as the chief financial officer for the Bank of England, has been recognized as the most influential black individual in the United Kingdom. At 43 years old, she holds a key leadership position overseeing the financial governance of the Bank’s £1 trillion balance sheet and funding reforms. Topping the 2026 Powerlist, which highlights the most powerful individuals of African, African Caribbean, and African American descent in the UK, Kyei joins esteemed company alongside figures like Ian Wright, Dame Pat McGrath, and Idris Elba.
Recruited by former Bank of England governor Mark Carney, Kyei expressed her humility at leading the list of influential black individuals in the UK. Reflecting on her upbringing, she noted the lack of women in prominent leadership roles balancing work and family. Grateful for the Bank of England’s supportive environment for working families, Kyei credits her parents – immigrants from Ghana who pursued successful careers in the UK – as her role models. With a background in chemistry and experience as an investment banker and CFO for Mortgages at Barclays Bank, Kyei brings a wealth of expertise to her current role at the Bank of England.
In her efforts to inspire young people to consider careers in banking, Kyei emphasizes that individuals do not need to have traditional backgrounds in mathematics, accounting, or economics. The annual Powerlist, which aims to showcase role models for young black individuals, was first introduced in 2007 by Powerful Media. Founder Michael Eboda initially believed the list would struggle to find candidates after three years, but the opposite has proven true.
