Rapper Ghetts charged after fatal hit-and-run in Ilford

Following a fatal crash in north-east London, rapper Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident occurred when Ghetts allegedly hit a 20-year-old man on Redbridge Lane East in Ilford on Saturday, 18 October, and failed to stop, according to the Met Police.

On the same day the victim passed away in hospital, Mr. Clarke-Samuel, 41, made an appearance at Stratford Magistrates’ Court. It is anticipated that the charges will be altered from causing serious injury to causing death by dangerous driving during the next hearing. Ghetts, hailing from Woodford Green, was taken into custody and is set to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 27 October.

Authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward regarding the crash. Ghetts, a Mercury Prize-nominated grime MC, rapper, and songwriter, has collaborated with notable artists such as Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, and Skepta. In addition to winning the Best Male Act at the Mobo Awards in 2021, Ghetts was honored with the Mobo Pioneer Award in 2024 for his significant impact on British black culture.
