Met officers sacked for gross misconduct after BBC Panorama Charing Cross investigation

A recent BBC Panorama report uncovered the gross misconduct of three Metropolitan Police officers, leading to their immediate dismissal. Sgt Joe McIlvenny, PC Philip Neilson, and PC Martin Borg faced expedited misconduct hearings after secret filming revealed their inappropriate behavior. Despite denying the allegations of gross misconduct, they admitted to making the offensive comments captured in the program. The accusations against all three officers were upheld during the hearings, resulting in their immediate dismissal.

Chair of the panel, Cdr Jason Prins, condemned the behavior of the officers, describing it as a “disgrace.” He emphasized that it was evident the comments made by the officers were abhorrent. Cdr Prins particularly criticized Sgt McIlvenny, stating that as a Police Sergeant in a leadership position, his conduct was even more egregious. Following the hearings, Met Police professionalism Cdr Simon Messinger affirmed the force’s commitment to holding misconduct hearings promptly, showcasing their dedication to addressing any areas of concern within the police force.

Sgt Joe McIlvenny, a nearly 20-year veteran of the Met Police, was recorded making dismissive and misogynistic comments during his time at Charing Cross police station. Despite arguing that the context was missing from his remarks, he was found guilty of gross misconduct. PC Philip Neilson faced similar allegations, including making offensive remarks about immigrants and advocating for violence against detainees. PC Martin Borg was also dismissed following reports of his enjoyment of excessive force on detainees and discriminatory remarks. The Metropolitan Police announced that seven more officers would be facing misconduct hearings in the coming week.

In light of these incidents, the reputation of the Metropolitan Police has been tarnished, affecting public confidence in the police force. The actions of these officers were deemed utterly disgraceful, underscoring the importance of upholding professionalism and accountability within law enforcement. As the investigations continue, it is imperative that such behavior is swiftly addressed to maintain the integrity and trust in the police
