A Minnesota company, REM5 STUDIOS, in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), is revolutionizing the way stories about global health are shared. Led by director of engagement Brian Skalak, the team is using virtual reality (VR) to provide immersive experiences that shed light on the challenges of vaccine delivery in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Their most recent project, Apporter La Vie, meaning Delivering Life, takes viewers on a journey through the DRC, following frontline worker Kasongo as he navigates extreme weather conditions and vast distances to deliver life-saving vaccines. This virtual experience aims to bring awareness to the critical mission of eradicating polio and ensuring immunization for all children, a mission often unseen by outsiders.
The virtual reality experience allows users to witness firsthand the challenges faced by health workers in maintaining the cold chain process, essential for keeping vaccines viable during transportation. Through ultra-high-definition immersive cameras, viewers can follow Kasongo’s team as they navigate difficult terrain and local customs, providing a unique perspective on the realities of vaccine delivery.
This innovative approach to storytelling has received support from the Gates Foundation, a key player in global vaccine initiatives. The foundation’s Senior Programme Officer for Polio Advocacy and Communications, Amber Zeddies, lauded the project as a powerful tool that brings human clarity and urgency to the mission of polio eradication. As public trust in vaccines wanes in some parts of the world, initiatives like Apporter La Vie and Polio’s Last Mile serve as vital reminders of the importance of immunization efforts worldwide
