Shropshire and Leeds hospitals dropped from national maternity review

The review of maternity failings across England has taken a new direction by dropping two NHS trusts from the investigation. Shropshire and Leeds trusts have been removed from the government’s rapid reviews of “failures in the system”. These trusts were initially included in the review but have now been excluded, resulting in shock among families in Shropshire and Leeds. The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH) was removed from the review after discussions with West Mercia Police about an ongoing investigation, while the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTH) was taken out following a separate maternity inquiry announced by the Secretary of State.

The national inquiry is focusing on 12 English NHS trusts, with a report expected by December. The urgency of the inquiry is emphasized as it aims to investigate and report back on the worst-performing maternity and neonatal services in the country. A troubling revelation from a BBC investigation highlighted that at least 56 babies and two mothers had died at LTH over the past five years, deaths that may have been preventable. Baroness Valerie Amos is leading the review into maternity failings across England to shed light on the issues.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed hope that the Leeds-focused inquiry would provide answers for families affected by the failings in care. The trust’s downgrade from “good” to “inadequate” raised concerns about the safety of women and babies in their care. In Shropshire, a review of maternity services conducted by senior midwife Donna Ockenden revealed catastrophic failures that led to numerous deaths and injuries. West Mercia Police initiated an investigation to determine if there were grounds for a criminal case against the trust or individuals involved. Charlotte Cheshire, a parent from Shropshire, expressed dismay at the trusts being removed from the review, highlighting concerns about the exclusion impacting the search for improvements in maternity care
