Liverpool City Council planning committee has given the green light for the utilization of purpose-built temporary classrooms to facilitate the opening of the new King’s Leadership Academy site in Wavertree, which is being managed by the Great Schools Trust. A funding agreement has been finalized with the Department for Education, allowing the school to accept an initial group of 210 Year 7 students starting in September. This academic institution commenced operations this September with its inaugural Year 7 intake and will function under the King’s Leadership Academy banner as part of the network of schools supported by the Great Schools Trust.
The temporary classrooms have been designed to modern standards, constructed with high-quality materials, and equipped to fully support the teaching and learning process from day one. These temporary structures will be in use while long-term plans are being finalized, providing immediate capacity and top-notch facilities for students and staff. It is anticipated that a permanent school building will eventually be erected on land currently occupied by unused office buildings, with the temporary structures set to remain until the permanent campus is completed. The school is expected to expand to accommodate approximately 1,050 students aged 11 to 16 as the permanent facilities come to fruition.
Efforts are underway to ensure safe and smooth access for students, staff, and the local community. The Council is slated to carry out targeted improvements to highways and junctions near the site, enhancing a nearby road junction and upgrading pedestrian and vehicular access to the school. These infrastructure enhancements are part of the Council’s comprehensive strategy to support the new school and local active travel routes. Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, emphasized the importance of establishing the King’s Leadership Academy in Wavertree to address the increasing demand for school places in the area.
Cllr Jo Kennedy, Cabinet Member for Employment, Educational Attainment, and Skills, expressed that the development not only responds to the growing need for secondary school spots but also represents a significant investment in the future of young people.
