In an unprecedented case linked to a gangland feud in central Scotland, Liam McDermid has admitted to being involved in serious and organised crime. McDermid, 25, attempted to use a metal detector in an effort to locate a hidden Glock pistol in undergrowth at Edinburgh’s Roseburn Path back in June. Despite his efforts, Police Scotland were able to recover the semi-automatic weapon and 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition near St George’s School.
This marked the initiation of the first prosecution under Police Scotland’s Operation Portaledge, which was established in response to the outbreak of gang violence across the central belt earlier in the year. McDermid’s actions were deemed to have contributed to the commission of serious organised crime, as stated in the charge brought against him.
Police surveillance tracked McDermid as he journeyed to Roseburn Path, observing his movements as he conducted his search for the weapon. Discovered with gloves, a balaclava, and £320 in cash upon his detainment, McDermid had also engaged in Google searches on how to operate a metal detector leading up to his ill-fated mission. Despite his extensive criminal record of 19 previous convictions, McDermid had never before served a prison sentence, although the judge indicated that a substantial custodial sentence is likely pending his sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh next month
