According to a report from the court, a woman lost her life amid a violent turf war involving rival drug gangs. Joanne Penney, aged 40, was tragically shot and killed as she opened the door at Llys Illtyd flats in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf, on 9 March. The prosecution revealed that she was fatally wounded by a single bullet from a handgun at close range, striking her heart instantly, causing her to stagger back into the living room where she succumbed to her injuries.
A group of individuals, including Joshua Gordon, Marcus Huntley, Melissa Quailey-Dashper, Jordan Mills-Smith, Kristina Ginova, and Tony Porter all deny the charges of murder. Additionally, Mr. Gordon, Ms. Quailey-Dashper, Ms. Ginova, and Mr. Porter refute allegations of participating in organized crime activities. The jury was informed that Ms. Penney became a victim of the clash between organized crime groups involved in drug trafficking in the south Wales region.
The court heard that the Rico OCG, led by Mr. Gordon, engaged in serious drug trafficking in Leicester and had expanded their operations to south Wales. Tensions rose when a rival gang in the area confronted and humiliated members of the Rico OCG, prompting discussions within the OCG about sending a message to their rivals. Carrying out this plan, Mr. Gordon and his associates traveled from Leicester to Cardiff and orchestrated the fatal shooting at Llys Illtyd.
Prosecutor Jonathan Rees detailed how the defendants were jointly responsible for Ms. Penney’s murder, emphasizing that they knowingly contributed to causing serious harm to another person. Police found Ms. Penney with a gunshot wound on the living room floor, efforts to save her proving unsuccessful. Evidence suggested the gun used in the attack was likely a converted starter pistol, adding a chilling layer to the tragic incident. The trial, expected to last up to nine weeks, is ongoing with further details revealed during proceedings
