Ian Watkins: Further arrests in prison death murder inquiry

Ian Watkins, the former frontman of Lostprophets, was tragically killed at HMP Wakefield on 11 October. Following his death, two men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder in connection with the incident. The suspects, aged 23 and 39, were apprehended at the prison by West Yorkshire Police.

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle stated that the investigation into Watkins’ murder is ongoing, with the recent arrests being a significant part of it. He assured that Watkins’ family is being kept informed of the progress of the case. The two arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to be interviewed, then bailed and returned to prison as the inquiries continue.

Before his imprisonment, Watkins had confessed to 13 offenses, including the attempted assault of an infant. The rock band Lostprophets, of which he was a member, was devastated by his actions. Despite their previous success in the music industry, the remaining band members expressed their shock and dismay at Watkins’ crimes and extended their sympathies to his victims.

A report on the conditions at HMP Wakefield prior to Watkins’ murder highlighted a significant increase in violence since the previous inspection in 2022. The report also noted the poor state of the prison’s infrastructure, citing issues such as repeated equipment failures and deficiencies in the perimeter security systems. An inquest into Watkins’ death is set to open at Wakefield Coroner’s Court in the near future
