Europe 'ready to deploy' troops to Ukraine if ceasefire secured, says Healey

Political reporter Sam Francis reported that Defence Secretary John Healey announced that European troops are prepared to deploy to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The potential meeting between the US and Russian leaders in Budapest, Hungary has sparked discussions regarding the involvement of European troops, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not been officially invited to participate.

Healey emphasized that if a peace deal is brokered by President Trump, European troops stand ready to help secure the peace in Ukraine. However, he stressed the importance of Ukrainians having a say in the negotiations and decision-making process. The “coalition of the willing,” consisting of 26 European nations and founded by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has been actively developing plans to support Ukraine’s security in the event of a ceasefire agreement.

According to Healey, extensive planning involving over 200 military planners from various nations has positioned UK troops to join a multinational force tasked with securing Ukraine’s border. The UK government has allocated funds exceeding £100m for the potential deployment, with preparations already underway. During a speech at the London Lord Mayor’s Annual Defence Lecture, Healey also highlighted Vladimir Putin’s perception of Britain as his “number one enemy,” primarily due to the UK’s support for Ukraine.

The recent announcement by Healey regarding the authorization of British soldiers to shoot down drones threatening military bases follows reports of a tense White House meeting between Trump and Zelensky. Reports suggested that Trump pressured Zelensky to concede land to Russia, a request that diverged from Zelensky’s initial plea for Tomahawk cruise missiles. As tensions escalate, European leaders have expressed concerns over the shifting dynamics and potential outcomes of the conflict in Ukraine
