Residents of Newcastle County Down have turned to using sandbags to fortify their properties in the wake of intense flooding brought on by heavy rainfall. Samuel Guist, a resident in the Tullybrannigan Road area, reported seeing torrents of water cascading past houses in the town. The situation was exacerbated by a yellow weather warning for rain that was in effect across parts of Northern Ireland over the weekend.
Despite living in the area for decades, one neighbor remarked that the scale of the flooding was unprecedented. While the water levels had not breached any homes at that point, Guist noted that the water level was steadily rising. Sandbags were swiftly distributed to the community after they raised the alarm with the NI Water Floodline. The deluge also brought down rocks and gravel from the Mourne Mountains, rendering many roads in the area practically impassable for regular vehicles.
Met Office predictions indicated that up to 30mm of rain could fall in the affected regions, with the potential for 100mm in the Mourne Mountains. Further weather warnings were issued for certain counties in the Republic of Ireland, including an orange alert for Counties Waterford and Cork, signaling the risk of flooding and treacherous travel conditions.
