Kevin Muscat deal to be new Rangers boss off

The deal that would have seen Kevin Muscat become the next head coach of Rangers FC has collapsed. Muscat, who is currently managing Shanghai Port in China, is still in the running for the Super League title, with the season potentially extending into November or December. Despite advanced talks between both parties, the potential delay in Muscat’s availability made it impossible to finalise the agreement.

This development follows the rejection of an offer by former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard to make a return to the club, as well as the withdrawal of ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl from contention. BBC Scotland reports that Rangers have been in discussions with several other candidates and are optimistic about announcing a new appointment soon. The sudden departure of Russell Martin from his coaching position after a mere 123 days was prompted by a poor start to the season, which led to Rangers finding themselves in sixth place in the Scottish Premiership with just one win in eight matches.

In the interim, Steven Smith has been leading Rangers as the acting head coach, having been promoted from the club’s academy. The team’s recent struggle was highlighted by a 2-2 draw against Dundee United, where they had to claw back from behind to salvage a point. Rangers are yet to secure a home victory in the league this season, with their next challenge set to take place on Thursday against Brann in the Europa League at 17:45 BST
