Revealing one of the biggest frauds in the UK, 14 people were convicted of being involved in a £28 million scam that defrauded over 3,500 individuals who were desperate to escape their long-held timeshare contracts. The victims, predominantly aged between 60 and 80, suffered financial losses, with some losing up to £80,000. They were coerced into prolonged high-pressure sales meetings, leaving them financially drained and still obligated by their timeshare agreements.

Sell My Timeshare (SMT) was the key player in this fraudulent scheme, with its founder Mark Rowe receiving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence for his part in the conspiracy. His wife, Nicola, also faced legal repercussions, receiving a two-year suspended sentence for money laundering. The investigation into SMT began nearly a decade ago when BBC Scotland Investigates exposed the company’s deceitful practices through covert filming. The victims, who had hoped to be released from their timeshare commitments, were instead duped into investing in fake “Monster Rewards” with promises of future benefits. This bait-and-switch tactic capitalized on vulnerable individuals seeking relief from their timeshare obligations.

Despite initial denials and threats of legal action from SMT, the broadcast of the BBC programme in 2016 uncovered the extent of the fraudulent activities. Subsequent police investigations led to multiple arrests, culminating in 14 convictions following four trials over two years at Southwark Crown Court.
