A suitcase preserved by Antony’s father tells the story of his family’s escape from Nazi Germany

From Britain, Peter enlisted in the British Army and fought in the Normandy landings. He married a local woman, and they had a child – Antony. Peter became a doctor, and the family settled in the southwest of England.

But despite building a successful new life in a new country, Peter carried with him the heartbreak of what the family had lost. Antony recalls his father making a promise to himself – to successfully “reclaim” from Hartig what had been “taken” by him some twenty years prior.

It wasn’t until after Peter died and Antony discovered the suitcase that he began to understand the weight his father had carried.

Reflections

Now, engaged in piecing together this chapter of his family’s history, Antony has come face to face with the stains of the past, the grotesque distortions of human ethics, and the staggering injustices done to so many.

Although the wounds may never fully heal, Antony has embarked on a journey of discovery – engaging with archivists and experts, studying the history books, and working with a lawyer to explore potential avenues for the restoration of his family’s lost legacy.

Through his pursuit of justice, Antony hopes to shine a light on the stories of countless others whose lives were forever altered by the horrors of the Holocaust.

As he sifts through the past, his family’s history is no longer buried beneath the weight of silence. Instead, it is brought to life – a testament to resilience, courage, and the enduring power of the human spirit to persist in the face of unspeakable darkness.
