Grieving dad makes plea after Bedford killer driver jailed

A speeding driver, Albert Jarosz, 28, was sentenced to four years and six months in jail at Luton Crown Court for causing the death of 25-year-old Rodrigo-Vasile Cosma on a pedestrian crossing in Bedford town center. The victim’s father, Viorel Cosma, expressed his devastation over losing his son due to the driver’s “two seconds of not paying attention.” The court heard how Jarosz undertook a line of traffic in his turbo-charged Audi A6, cutting back into a right-hand lane near the crossing, and was driving at one-and-a-half times the speed limit when the fatal accident occurred.

During the trial, jurors learned that Jarosz was driving approximately 45mph (72km/h) in a 30mph (48km/h) zone and that his Audi had two defective tires. Judge Allison Hunter condemned Jarosz’s dangerous driving as an “appalling display” and banned him from driving for seven years and three months. The victim’s father, speaking through an interpreter, urged all drivers to pay more attention and be kinder on the roads, emphasizing how two seconds of neglect ended his son’s promising life.

Jarosz, who admitted causing death by careless driving but denied causing death by dangerous driving, called emergency services after the incident and expressed remorse, saying “I am sorry” with his head in his hands. A witness testified that he appeared distraught. The prosecutor described Jarosz’s actions as “selfish,” while a police investigator labeled his driving as “an appalling display” given the wet road conditions and the fact that he used the incorrect lane to gain an advantage while speeding with defective tires. The victim, a factory supervisor, suffered a severe head injury and died about a month after the tragic accident, leaving his family utterly devastated.

Despite coming to the UK from Poland in 2019, Jarosz claimed he had not read the Highway Code and was unfamiliar with the road layout in central Bedford. His defense lawyer acknowledged his struggle with the consequences of his actions, describing him as “utterly distraught.” The jury concluded that Jarosz’s reckless driving, combined with the pedestrian light being red, resulted in the senseless loss of a young life, leaving a grieving family to mourn the son who had a bright future ahead
