Mum of baby found at Legacy funeral home says 'I'm trying to forgive'

A grieving mother in Hull is struggling to forgive the undertaker who mishandled her stillborn baby’s remains. Jasmine Beverley gave birth prematurely in May 2022 to her son, Sunny Beverley-Conlin, and held a funeral where they were given ashes to remember him by. However, almost two years later, it was revealed that the ashes were not his, and their son’s body was still at the funeral home. Former undertaker Robert Bush pleaded guilty to 35 counts of fraud by false representation, with one charge related to Mrs. Beverley, during a court appearance at Hull Crown Court.

Mrs. Beverley expressed her struggle to forgive Bush for his actions, stating, “I am trying to forgive him, but I am finding it hard, there must be some reason why he did this.” She described the original funeral service for Sunny as “beautiful” and held at an on-site chapel at Legacy’s headquarters. The family received an urn of ashes after the ceremony, only to find out later that they belonged to an unidentified stranger. Mrs. Beverley emotionally shared that she cared for the urn daily, showing love for whoever was in it, believing it to be her own baby.

Humberside Police launched an investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in 2024 after receiving a concerning report about the deceased. They found 35 bodies and at least 163 people’s ashes at the funeral home. Sunny was the only stillborn baby discovered among the remains. Mrs. Beverley, pregnant with her fifth child at the time, received the shocking news of Sunny’s discovery, causing her immense distress and leading to suicidal thoughts. She emphasized how talking about pregnancy loss remained a sensitive topic and how reliving Sunny’s birth had caused further pain.

Following the court hearing, where Bush denied multiple charges related to improper burials and theft from charity funds, Mrs. Beverley spoke about her mixed emotions. She expressed relief that her family could find closure, unlike others who have to wait until next year’s trial. Bush was granted bail for his upcoming court appearances and will be sentenced after the conclusion of his trial
