Jury sees alleged killer dance after Rhiannon Whyte's death

During the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, it was revealed that an asylum seeker named Deng Majek from Sudan is being accused of fatally stabbing a Walsall hotel worker, Rhiannon Whyte, 23 times with a screwdriver on a railway station platform. This tragic incident took place on October 20, 2024, at Bescot Stadium railway station, leading to the victim’s death three days later. Shockingly, jurors were shown a video of Mr. Majek dancing near the hotel just 90 minutes after the attack, with an ambulance visible in the background.

Prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC informed the jury that the footage captured Mr. Majek’s excitement about his actions, as he danced near the hotel shortly after the incident. The video, spanning nine seconds, displayed blue lights in the backdrop, which were from the emergency services present at the railway station. Additionally, CCTV footage presented by Det Sgt Rebecca Haywood confirmed this, shedding light on the disturbing events that unfolded that night.

On the night of the attack, following Ms. Whyte’s tragic death, Mr. Majek was observed sitting with friends in a car park, smoking and drinking. The accused, who claimed to be 19 years old, had been residing in the hotel designated for asylum seekers. Furthermore, Mr. Majek denied the charges of murder and possessing an offensive weapon, as the trial progresses to uncover more details surrounding the devastating incident that took place at the railway station.

Prosecutors alleged that Mr. Majek trailed Ms. Whyte from the hotel to the railway station, where he launched a brutal attack before discarding her phone into a river. Subsequently, he went on to purchase alcohol. The jury was shown CCTV footage from various locations, although the security cameras covering the station platforms were non-operational at the time. The court proceedings unveiled more damning evidence, including images of Mr. Majek purchasing alcohol and returning to the hotel later that night, portraying a grim timeline of events that culminated in the tragic loss of Rhiannon Whyte’s life
