‘Hopeful and imaginative’: introducing the UK’s ‘best’ new building

In Bermondsey, south London, a unique care home designed to combat social isolation and provide affordable housing for the elderly has been named the best new building in the UK. Appleby Blue, a modern adaptation of a traditional almshouse, features 59 apartments with rent caps, along with a community center and rooftop gardens. Created by Witherford Watson Mann Architects for the United St Saviour’s Charity, the innovative design aims to promote community cohesion.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize was awarded to Appleby Blue, recognizing its response to the pressing issues of loneliness among older individuals and the shortage of affordable housing. The project, built on the grounds of a former care home, incorporates a community center accessible to non-residents, including young mothers and their children who participate in various activities such as yoga classes. The design encourages interaction and engagement among residents and the wider community.

Martyn Craddock, the chief executive of United St Saviour’s Charity, highlighted the focus on sociability within the building, allowing residents to connect with each other on different levels. One resident named Rohan praised the uplifting design of the property, noting how it prevents feelings of depression. Appleby Blue faced strong competition at the awards ceremony, notably from the renovated Elizabeth Tower at the Houses of Parliament. The winning project’s emphasis on transformative design and its positive impact on residents’ lives were key factors in securing the prestigious prize.

Stephen Witherford, director of Witherford Watson Mann Architects, expressed gratitude for the recognition by the RIBA Stirling Prize, emphasizing the significance of architecture in creating spaces that truly enhance people’s lives. Collaborating closely with United St Saviour’s Charity, the architectural team succeeded in developing an environment that fosters connections, reduces loneliness, and supports a fulfilling later life for the residents.
