A tragic incident occurred during a family holiday in Greece, where a five-year-old boy named Theo Treharne-Jones from Merthyr Tydfil drowned accidentally in a hotel pool at Atlantica Holiday Village in Kos on 15 June 2019. Theo, who had been diagnosed with Smith-Magenis syndrome, displayed “autistic behaviors” which made him less naturally cautious, causing him to wander at night, ultimately leading to the unfortunate accident.
Despite his family’s efforts to secure their hotel room door with obstacles like two buggies and a suitcase, Theo managed to escape, highlighting the vulnerability of children with specific needs. The heartbreaking moment was described by Theo’s mother, Nina Treharne, who recalled the chaos that ensued when they were alerted to Theo’s plight in the pool the following morning, turning their vacation into a nightmare.
The inquest revealed that TUI, the tour operator, had considered the possibility of installing door chains on all hotel room doors after Theo’s death. However, due to safety concerns related to fire hazards and potential difficulties during emergencies, the idea was ultimately dismissed. Assistant Coroner Gavin Knox issued a prevention of future deaths report, urging TUI and the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) to reconsider the matter for the safety of vulnerable individuals in the future.
Mr. Knox expressed his concerns regarding the safety of vulnerable individuals and emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring. While acknowledging the efforts made to resuscitate Theo and offering condolences to his grieving parents, he underscored the importance of revisiting safety protocols to protect individuals in vulnerable situations, hoping that the authorities would take necessary actions to prevent such incidents in the future
