McCann family friends left 'disturbed' by alleged stalker, court hears

A court has heard shocking details of alleged stalking involving a couple who were with Madeleine McCann’s family on the night the girl disappeared. Julia Wandelt and Karen Spragg are on trial charged with stalking the missing girl’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. Miss Wandelt, who believes she is Madeleine, attempted to make contact with David and Fiona Payne in late 2024, which left Mrs. Payne feeling “angry.” The court heard that Miss Wandelt sent personal photos and even tried to befriend the couple’s daughter on social media.

Madeleine McCann’s disappearance in 2007 remains one of the most widely reported missing child cases, with her whereabouts still unknown. Testifying in court, Mr. Payne revealed that he received personal photos of his family from Miss Wandelt, who went as far as phoning him and sending a series of emails. These emails included photos of Miss Wandelt’s grandfather with a suspect in the disappearance, as well as private photos of the Payne and McCann families. Miss Wandelt claimed the photos were sent to her by someone close to the McCanns who believed she was Madeleine.

During the trial, Mr. Payne shared his experience of receiving calls from Miss Wandelt in October 2024, expressing her desire to reach out to the McCanns despite facing closed doors. The contact continued through various messages and emails, prompting questions about the McCanns and their personal details. Miss Wandelt made references to the “tapas group,” of which the Paynes were a part, attempting to implicate him in a bid to clear her name. Despite the persistent attempts at contact, the Paynes did not respond, instead forwarding the messages to the authorities.

Additional evidence revealed the involvement of the Met Police in investigating potential leads related to three women who could have been Madeleine. Twelve leads were submitted to Operation Grange, including Miss Wandelt, but further action was taken on three specific women. One woman was asked for photographic evidence, another was interviewed in person, and a third provided a DNA sample for comparison. However, none of the three women proved to be Madeleine. Miss Wandelt and Mrs. Spragg, both denying the charges against them, continue to face trial as the case unfolds
