'Hugely loved' EastEnders star dies aged 88 in Eastbourne

Tony Caunter, known for his role as Roy Evans in EastEnders, has passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by his family. The actor portrayed a car dealer who had a romantic entanglement with Pat Butcher, played by Pam St Clement, on the British soap opera from 1994 to 2003. His family revealed that he peacefully passed away on Monday evening at Eastbourne District General Hospital, just a week after the death of his wife of 63 years, Fran.

Survived by his daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, Caunter will be deeply missed, according to his family. They expressed gratitude towards the medical staff at the East Sussex hospital for their exceptional care during his final moments, as well as to the Eastbourne Gardens nursing home for their support and compassion in recent months. The family requested privacy during this challenging period as they mourn the loss of their beloved father.

Throughout his tenure as Roy, Caunter was involved in several memorable storylines on EastEnders, notably the scandalous affair between Pat and her ex-husband Frank Butcher, portrayed by Mike Reid. Additionally, his on-screen character’s son, Barry Evans, played by Shaun Williamson, met a tragic end when he was pushed off a cliff in a gripping episode. Caunter’s diverse acting career included appearances in productions like Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, and the TV series Juliet Bravo. He also starred in Boon, a drama series alongside Michael Elphick, another EastEnders cast member.
