Liverpool has been named as one of the final three contestants for the 2026 European Capital of Innovation Awards, according to the European Commission. The iCapital prize, backed by the European Innovation Council under Horizon Europe, is designed to recognize cities at the forefront of leveraging innovation to build more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban environments. After a rigorous selection process, Liverpool emerged as a top three finalist, marking the first time a UK city has achieved this recognition.
Liverpool’s bid, known as ‘LIFE’ (Liverpool Innovates for Everyone), highlights the city’s advancements since its designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The proposal showcases ongoing efforts to inspire young individuals and enhance lives through inclusive innovation, fueled by culture and driven by innovation. The city has been acknowledged for its significant urban transformation, blending cultural revival with technological progress and using past achievements as stepping stones towards future growth.
Mayor Steve Rotheram expressed his excitement over Liverpool’s selection as a finalist for the European Capital of Innovation, emphasizing the city’s status as an innovation hub and its ambitious vision for the future. Through strategic collaborations between the arts, technology, and social sectors, Liverpool has solidified its reputation as a leader in creativity and innovation. Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, also highlighted the city’s growing reputation for innovation and expressed hopes to reinforce its position as a beacon of best practices.
In addition to Liverpool, the other two finalists for the European Capital of Innovation Awards are Grenoble Alpes Métropole and Rotterdam. These cities have showcased exemplary commitment to fostering innovation-based ecosystems, setting a standard for sustainable and inclusive urban development across Europe. The winners of the iCapital Awards will be honored at a ceremony in Turin, Italy, on December 4, 2025, during the ‘Cities Innovate Summit’, where they will also join the exclusive iCapital Alumni network
