Universities must act on antisemitism, Bridget Phillipson says

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is calling on universities to take action against the rising incidents of antisemitism on campuses. She expressed concern over the increasing harassment and discrimination faced by Jewish students, emphasizing the need for a safe environment for all students. Phillipson highlighted the UK government’s efforts to provide training to university staff and students to combat antisemitism.

She stressed the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel safe to express their identity without fear of harassment or intimidation. The government is allocating funds for training sessions and projects aimed at promoting interfaith understanding and combating online misinformation.

While acknowledging the right to protest and freedom of expression, Patel criticized the recent pro-Palestinian marches in London, describing them as “ugly protests” that foster division and hatred in society. She pointed out the levels of animosity demonstrated towards the Jewish community during these gatherings, noting the tense atmosphere among protesters with conflicting views. The Metropolitan Police reported several arrests related to breaches of public order and support for proscribed groups during the protests
