Vigil organiser 'stunned' by alleged McCann stalker's approach, jury told

During a trial at Leicester Crown Court, Janet Kennedy, the organiser of an annual vigil for Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, testified that she was approached by the alleged stalker of the missing girl’s parents. Karen Spragg and Julia Wandelt are facing charges of stalking Kate and Gerry McCann, with the court hearing that Wandelt believes she is actually Madeleine. During the 2024 vigil marking the anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, Wandelt tried to hand Kennedy an envelope, which both defendants deny.

Kennedy, who is Madeleine’s great-aunt, informed the court that she had always supported the McCann family and was a confidante to Kate McCann. She mentioned that media reports about Wandelt’s claims before the 2024 vigil had reached her, and Mrs. McCann had mentioned receiving strange messages. Despite rain disrupting preparations for the vigil, it was held inside the Baptist Church, according to parish priest Rev Robert Gladstone, who was approached by someone named Julia requesting to meet the McCanns after leading the service.

After the service, Rev Gladstone revealed that Wandelt claimed to be Madeleine, stating that she had been abused as a child and raised by individuals who were not her actual parents. Dismissing Wandelt’s claims, Rev Gladstone decided not to inform the family. However, Kennedy shared that a minister informed her about someone wanting to speak to a family member, who turned out to be Wandelt accompanied by a male friend. Wandelt allegedly told Kennedy that she was Madeleine and had information for the McCanns to prove her identity.

Kennedy described the encounter with Wandelt as surreal, as she tried to stay composed while receiving the envelope from Wandelt. Despite the claims, Kennedy felt that the essence of Madeleine was not present in Wandelt. She informed the jury that Mrs. McCann declined to accept the letter from Wandelt, though Kennedy held onto it for several months before tearing it up. Following Wandelt and Spragg’s alleged disturbances at the McCanns’ home and relentless phone calls, the defendants were arrested at Bristol Airport. The trial, in which both defendants deny the stalking charges, is ongoing
