A meeting between Sir Tony Blair and Jeffrey Epstein in Downing Street during Blair’s time as prime minister has been confirmed by the BBC. The meeting, organized following lobbying from Lord Peter Mandelson, took place in 2002, six years prior to Epstein’s guilty plea for soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008. According to a memo penned by senior civil servant Matthew Rycroft, Blair was briefed about Epstein, described as a “super-rich” financial adviser, before their scheduled encounter.
The BBC obtained emails revealing that Lord Mandelson had pushed for the meeting, citing Epstein as “a friend of mine” who former US President Bill Clinton wanted to introduce to Blair. Despite government officials initially blocking the release of these documents due to concerns about UK-US relations, they have now been made public under a Freedom of Information request. The release followed Lord Mandelson’s dismissal as US ambassador after further revelations about his relationship with Epstein.
In the email exchange, Lord Mandelson refers to Epstein as “safe” and expresses Clinton’s desire to introduce him to Blair. Mandelson describes Epstein as a dynamic figure involved in various scientific and economic ventures globally. The memo written by Rycroft, marked as restricted, detailed Epstein’s ties to the Duke of York and his closeness to Clinton and Mandelson. It indicated that Clinton believed a meeting with Blair would be valuable, particularly for discussions on science and international economic and monetary trends.
Epstein, convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor, passed away in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges. The archive also unveiled a schedule of Trade and Industry Meetings including the memo briefing Blair on Epstein’s background ahead of their 2002 meeting. Rycroft emphasized Epstein’s association with the super-rich and his connections to influential figures like Clinton and Mandelson. The released documents shed light on a previously undisclosed chapter in Blair’s tenure as prime minister
